Universal Forwarder (part of PORT ONE Group) successfully tackled a challenging project for shipping a cargo of heavy-lift, oversized process equipment from Yekaterinburg to India for NLMK Group's transformer steel plant, which is under construction. We applied as the main logistics solution, 40-foot special-purpose FlatRacks (PF), OT and HC containers.
The cargo is a fabrication line that includes an electrical insulating coating unit for processing electrical silicon steel and components for it. The shipment total volume amounted to 357 packages, with weight of 1,000 tonnes. The maximum dimensions of some lots reached 16 m in length, 4.5 m in width and 4.55 m in height.
The export of first loaded containers began in February 2021 and was carried out in severe frost conditions. The employees of Universal Forwarder arranged the entire logistics process, including inspection, repacking and labelling of packages, schemes development for securing cargo in containers, fumigation, ensuring phased multimodal transportation, including unloading from the ship at the port of destination. The last items will be delivered to the destination in November 2021.
“Since most of the package units were out-of-gauge we used specialized 40ft unit containers for transportation,” said Nikita Mashchenkov, head of the Universal Forwarder’s Ural region customer service team. “The decision to transport the freight in containers made it possible to unify the loading of the same type of package units, not to wait for the aggregation of a shipload lot in the port, as well as to ensure the maximum safety of expensive equipment, to eliminate the human factor that sometimes occurs during handling break-bulk cargo.”
The haulage route stretches from Yekaterinburg to the ports of St. Petersburg and Novorossiysk by rail and by motor transport, including obtaining special permits, cargo transfer to a ship and then sending the break-bulk cargo to the Maharashtra based Port of Nava Sheva, and then transportation further by heavy-duty trucks to the plant construction site. The completion of the new plant and equipment installation was scheduled for the end of 2021. In 2022, the plant commenced producing transformer steel of premium grades, with a planned capacity of 64 000 tonnes of finished product.
