Ro-Ro Cargo
Ro-Ro shipping is a type of maritime transportation of wheeled cargo that does not require the use of cranes and other expensive lifting equipment for handling operations at the port. This particular cargo is transported by ferries and Ro-Ro ships. They are outfitted with a ramp that enables rolling on board and rolling off the cargo directly to the pier. This type of cargo can be both the transported wheeled vehicles (passenger vehicles and trucks, special equipment), and cargo arriving at the port on various trailers (food and consumer goods).
This seaborne transportation solution is somewhat faster as compared to bulk cargo shipping, since the Ro-Ro routes are mostly shorter, on average 300 to 700 nautical miles. This service also means expedite handling and turnaround at the port and directly depends on the development of highway network because the wheeled cargo delivery to the point of destination is performed truck hauling service.
In Russia, the Ro-Ro cargo is largely imported. The forwarding of inbound cargo is associated with the requirements of customers to minimize the time required for port formalities, a large number of documents to be verified and issued by the forwarder, and prompt well-coordinated work of the shipping agent and the forwarder.
